What You Will Do:
The Business Intelligence Specialist is a strategic contributor to the firm's Marketing and Business Development function, responsible for delivering high-impact research, competitive intelligence, market insights that support business development initiatives, client development efforts, and strategic firm priorities. Sitting within the Business Development team and reporting to the Director of Business Development, this role works closely with attorneys, practice group leaders, firm leadership, Marketing and BD professionals, and Knowledge Research Services to provide timely, accurate, and actionable intelligence on clients, prospects, industries, and competitors.
The role also supports the firm’s growth initiatives by identifying market opportunities, developing actionable recommendations, and uncovering cross-practice expansion opportunities that strengthen client relationships and drive strategic business development efforts.
The ideal candidate combines rigorous research skills with commercial instincts and the ability to synthesize complex findings into polished, executive-ready deliverables that drive decisions. Strong communication skills, business acumen, and the ability to work fluidly across the firm are essential.
Essential Job Requirements:
Research & Competitive Intelligence
- Research, analyze, and deliver intelligence on companies, industries, competitors, key individuals, and market conditions to support client meetings, pitches, RFPs, lateral recruiting, partner retreats, and strategic planning.
- Develop SWOT analyses, company profiles, industry overviews, biographical summaries, and deal and transaction analyses that equip attorneys and BD professionals to engage clients and prospects with confidence.
- Leverage PitchBook, Capital IQ, Bloomberg Law, and other premium databases to surface financial data, deal flow, ownership structures, market trends, litigation history, and outside counsel intelligence relevant to the firm's practice areas and target clients.
- Proactively monitor clients, target prospects, competitors, and relevant industries, regulatory developments, and economic conditions, and communicate key developments through timely alerts, summaries, and intelligence briefings.
- Monitor lateral attorney movement, practice group trends, and competitive talent dynamics across the legal industry; deliver timely intelligence to Recruiting and firm leadership to support expansion planning and opportunity identification.
- Support the Recruiting team with due diligence on lateral attorney candidates, synthesizing internal data and external sources into concise, executive-level profiles that inform hiring decisions.
- Identify trends, transactions, and market developments likely to generate demand for the firm's services.
- Support conference and event strategy by delivering attendee intelligence, executive profiles, investor identification, and prospect segmentation to optimize relationship-building and pipeline development.
Business Development Strategy Support
- Partner with BD colleagues and other requestors to clarify research needs, scope assignments, and deliver work product in the format most useful to the audience.
- Contribute intelligence and supporting analysis for key-client planning, cross-selling, opportunity identification, and pursuit decisions.
- Contribute to the identification of whitespace opportunities, high-value prospects, and relationship pathway strategies that support revenue generation and client retention.
- Help develop and maintain recurring intelligence products, including target lists, market briefs, client-growth summaries, and monitoring reports.
- Coordinate with Knowledge Management, Finance, Marketing Operations, and other business teams as needed to gather data and support more complex requests.
Research Tools, Analytics, and AI-Assisted Workflow
- Use Excel, Power BI, and similar tools to organize information, identify patterns, and create visuals that make intelligence deliverables clearer and more actionable.
- Use approved AI-assisted research tools and generative AI applications, where appropriate, to accelerate research, summarize information, and improve workflow efficiency, while validating all outputs for quality, accuracy, confidentiality, and relevance.
- Document effective prompts, workflows, and research approaches, and share practical tips with the team to support consistent quality.
- Contribute to the ongoing evaluation and adoption of new research tools, AI platforms, data sources, and technology solutions that strengthen the department's intelligence capabilities.
- Support the consistent and responsible use of approved AI tools within Marketing & Business Development by documenting effective workflows and applying quality-control standards.
- Serve as a resource to Marketing & BD colleagues on effective use of AI-assisted research workflows, supporting knowledge sharing and adoption across the team.
Operations and Knowledge Assets
- Manage incoming research requests through the firm’s workflow process, including status updates, prioritization, and timely delivery.
- Maintain templates, source lists, trackers, watchlists, and other intelligence assets to support consistency and scalability.
- Identify recurring request patterns and contribute ideas for converting high-frequency work into templated, scalable intelligence products.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
Required
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree required.
- Approximately 2–4 years of relevant experience in competitive intelligence, business research, market analysis, legal research, or business-development support in a law firm, professional-services firm, consulting environment, financial-services setting, or similarly research-intensive environment.
- Strong research skills and experience synthesizing legal, business, financial, and market information into clear, concise work product.
- Excellent writing, editing, and executive-summary skills.
- Experience using research platforms such as PitchBook, Capital IQ, Bloomberg Law, LexisNexis, Westlaw, or similar tools.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint; familiarity with Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools preferred.
- Demonstrated comfort using AI-assisted research tools in a professional setting, with sound judgment and strong quality-control habits.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines with attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including comfort working with attorneys, business professionals, and senior stakeholders.
- Intellectual curiosity and the ability to turn ambiguous questions into decision-ready recommendations.
- High level of discretion and commitment to confidentiality.
Preferred
- Law firm or other professional-services experience.
- Familiarity with CRM and experience databases.
- Background in library science, information science, knowledge management, or a related discipline.
- Exposure to corporate transactions, litigation trends, capital markets, private equity/venture capital, or other topics relevant to the firm’s core practices.

The expected salary range for candidates meeting the requirements of this position is $100,000 to $115,000. The range provided is the salary that Lowenstein Sandler in good faith believes at the time of this posting that it is willing to pay for the advertised position. Exact compensation will be determined based on individual candidate qualifications and location. Our benefits package includes coverage options for medical, dental, vision, prescription drug, life insurance, disability, FSAs, 401K, and paid time off.
