Sussex County Community College is currently seeking qualified candidates for part time Front Desk and Student Support Assistant. The Front Desk and Student Support Assistant serves as a welcoming and knowledgeable first point of contact for students, prospective students, parents, visitors, faculty, and staff. The position provides professional front-desk coverage while assisting students in navigating College services, procedures, offices, and resources.
The Assistant responds to inquiries in person, by telephone, email, and other communication methods; provides accurate general information; assists students with routine questions and transactions; directs students to the appropriate College office or resource; and supports the day-to-day operations of the Student Services area.
This position requires excellent customer service skills, professionalism, confidentiality, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
Front Desk and Customer Service
- Serve as the primary receptionist and first point of contact for the assigned Student Services area.
- Greet students, prospective students, visitors, faculty, and staff in a friendly, professional, and helpful manner.
- Answer, screen, and direct telephone calls and respond to routine inquiries.
- Monitor and respond to general email and other electronic inquiries as assigned.
- Provide accurate information regarding College offices, services, hours, locations, procedures, and resources.
- Maintain a professional, organized, and welcoming reception area.
- Assist with appointment scheduling, check-in procedures, and student traffic flow.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality when handling student information.
Student Support
- Assist students with routine questions regarding registration, admissions, financial aid, bursar services, academic support, student records, and other College services.
- Help students identify the appropriate College office or staff member to address their specific needs.
- Assist students in navigating College systems, forms, portals, and online resources when appropriate.
- Provide basic assistance with routine forms and processes while referring matters requiring professional or specialized assistance to the appropriate staff member.
- Support student retention and engagement by providing courteous, timely, and solution-oriented assistance.
- Recognize situations requiring escalation and promptly refer students to the appropriate administrator or professional staff member.
Administrative Support
- Enter and retrieve information from College databases and systems as assigned.
- Assist with data entry, scanning, filing, copying, correspondence, and other routine administrative functions.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Assist with student communications, mailings, outreach activities, orientations, workshops, and special events.
- Prepare materials and informational packets for students and visitors.
- Assist departmental staff with special projects and other administrative assignments.
Campus and Community Support
- Provide directions and general information regarding campus facilities, programs, events, and services.
- Maintain familiarity with major College departments and student resources.
- Promote a positive image of Sussex County Community College through professional and courteous interactions.
- Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and other student-facing departments.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of customer service, administrative, reception, higher education, or related experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate judgment.
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and email.
- Ability to learn and use College information systems and other technology.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher.
- Previous experience in a college, university, K-12 school, government agency, or other student/customer service environment.
- Experience working with diverse populations.
- Experience with student information systems, customer relationship management systems, or other higher education technology.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills are desirable.
