Director of Marketing
Location: Montville/Montvale, New Jersey
Compensation: $120,000–$150,000 annually
Work Arrangement: In-office initially, with potential for hybrid flexibility based on performance
We are a rapidly growing direct-to-consumer e-commerce company operating within the skincare and beauty industry. Our business serves as a large-scale marketplace featuring hundreds of brands and thousands of products, while also supporting a portfolio of proprietary skincare brands. After a period of significant growth, we are entering an exciting stage of expansion and are looking for talented leaders who can bring structure, execution, and measurable results to an entrepreneurial environment. This is a fast-moving startup where ideas move quickly, opportunities are abundant, and individuals are given significant ownership over their areas of responsibility.
We are seeking a Director of Marketing to take complete ownership of the company's marketing function and turn strategy into execution. This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who understands that great marketing is not simply about generating ideas—it is about building the plan, executing it, analyzing the results, and continuously improving performance. The ownership team brings extensive industry knowledge, creative ideas, and access to significant customer and campaign data; this individual will be responsible for translating those resources into organized, strategic, high-performing marketing initiatives. The immediate focus will be on digital marketing, particularly email, SMS, copywriting, campaign strategy, and data-driven optimization, with significant opportunity to expand the company's social media and broader digital presence over time.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of the company's marketing department, establishing priorities, processes, timelines, and measurable objectives.
- Develop and manage a comprehensive marketing calendar covering campaigns, promotions, product launches, seasonal initiatives, and customer communications.
- Translate ideas and direction from ownership into fully executed marketing campaigns.
- Lead the strategy, development, execution, and optimization of email and SMS marketing campaigns.
- Determine optimal campaign timing, frequency, sequencing, and messaging based on historical performance and customer behavior.
- Analyze campaign data, including open rates, click-through rates, engagement, conversions, and other relevant KPIs, to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Leverage existing data and technology platforms to make informed marketing decisions rather than relying solely on assumptions or intuition.
- Develop and refine customer segmentation, targeting, personalization, and campaign strategies.
- Create, edit, and oversee compelling marketing copy across email, SMS, website, and other digital channels.
- Establish testing strategies, including A/B testing of messaging, timing, offers, subject lines, and other campaign variables.
- Coordinate with graphic designers, web developers, brand coordinators, and other internal resources to ensure campaigns are executed accurately and on schedule.
- Ensure marketing initiatives remain aligned with brand positioning, promotional strategy, customer behavior, and business objectives.
- Monitor campaign performance and provide clear reporting and recommendations to company leadership.
- Identify underperforming campaigns and proactively develop strategies to improve results.
- Build repeatable marketing processes that allow the company to scale efficiently.
- Evaluate existing marketing technology and identify opportunities to better utilize available platforms, systems, and customer data.
- Develop a broader digital marketing strategy as the company's immediate marketing infrastructure becomes more established.
- Identify opportunities to expand the company's social media presence, content strategy, and digital brand awareness.
- Stay current on emerging digital marketing trends, tools, technologies, and best practices.
- Bring structure and accountability to a fast-moving entrepreneurial environment where multiple initiatives may be happening simultaneously.
- Serve as the primary owner and point person for marketing, ensuring ideas do not remain on a whiteboard but move through planning, execution, measurement, and optimization.
- Work closely with ownership and company leadership to identify new growth opportunities and translate them into actionable marketing initiatives.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive marketing experience, with a strong emphasis on digital marketing.
- Demonstrated experience owning or leading marketing initiatives from strategy through execution.
- Strong hands-on experience with email marketing and SMS marketing.
- Proven ability to analyze marketing data and use performance insights to make strategic decisions.
- Strong copywriting and communication skills.
- Experience developing and managing marketing calendars and campaign schedules.
- Understanding of customer segmentation, targeting, engagement, and lifecycle marketing.
- Experience with marketing automation, CRM, email/SMS platforms, or comparable marketing technology.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and take complete ownership of responsibilities.
- Strong understanding of digital marketing channels and how they work together.
- Comfortable working with data, analytics, reporting, and performance metrics.
- Experience collaborating with creative, web, sales, operations, and other cross-functional teams.
- Entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to be hands-on rather than relying exclusively on delegation.
- Ability to thrive in a startup or rapidly changing environment.
- Strong business judgment and the ability to balance creativity with measurable performance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in e-commerce, direct-to-consumer, skincare, beauty, cosmetics, wellness, or consumer products.
- Experience with large product catalogs, marketplaces, or multi-brand environments.
- Experience with platforms such as Klaviyo, Shopify, Zoho, or comparable CRM/e-commerce systems.
- Experience with paid digital advertising and conversion optimization.
- Experience with social media strategy and content marketing.
- Experience with A/B testing and marketing experimentation.
- Experience building or scaling a marketing function within a growing company.
Compensation & Opportunity
- Base salary: $120,000–$150,000 per year, commensurate with experience and demonstrated capabilities.
- Opportunity to play a highly visible leadership role within a rapidly growing startup.
- Significant autonomy and ownership over the company's marketing function.
- Opportunity to build processes, implement new strategies, and directly influence company growth.
- Potential to expand the scope of the position as the company continues to grow, including broader responsibility across digital marketing, social media, brand development, and additional ventures.
- Initially in-office in the Montville/Montvale, New Jersey area.
- After successfully establishing the marketing function and demonstrating the ability to independently manage the role, the company expects to offer increased flexibility, potentially including a hybrid or remote arrangement.
This is an opportunity for a marketing leader who wants to build, execute, and own—not simply advise.
