Boiler Operator / Operating Engineer
Position Summary
The Boiler Operator / Operating Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation, monitoring, inspection, and basic maintenance of the Showboat Hotel's central utility plant, including high-pressure steam boilers, refrigeration/chilled-water systems, and associated auxiliary equipment.
The position requires a New Jersey Department of Labor Operating Engineer's License with a minimum Blue Seal (Grade C) classification in both Steam and Refrigeration, appropriate to the equipment operated.
The Showboat's central plant includes 850 boiler-horsepower steam boilers and 1,280-ton chillers.
Required New Jersey Licenses
The successful candidate must hold both of the following New Jersey Department of Labor Blue Seal (Grade C) Operating Engineer licenses, or higher:
- NJ Blue Seal 1-C - Steam Engineer's License
- Required for operation of the Showboat's high-pressure steam boiler plant.
- The facility operates 850 boiler-horsepower steam boilers, with each boiler exceeding 500 boiler horsepower.
- NJ Blue Seal 2-C - Refrigeration Engineer's License
- Required for operation of the Showboat's large refrigeration/chilled-water plant.
- The facility operates 1,280-ton chillers, with each chiller exceeding 500 tons of refrigeration capacity.
Applicants must possess both the Steam (1-C) and Refrigeration (2-C) Blue Seal licenses, or higher classifications that encompass the required equipment. A license in only one discipline does not meet the requirements of this position.
Essential Duties
- Operate and monitor high-pressure steam boilers and associated auxiliary equipment.
- Operate and monitor large commercial/industrial refrigeration and chilled-water systems.
- Monitor boiler pressure, temperature, water levels, combustion conditions, feedwater systems, and boiler controls.
- Monitor chilled-water temperatures, pressures, condenser-water systems, chiller performance, and related operating conditions.
- Perform routine central-plant rounds and inspections.
- Maintain accurate operating logs and document equipment conditions.
- Start, operate, shut down, and change over boilers, chillers, pumps, compressors, and related equipment in accordance with established procedures.
- Identify abnormal operating conditions and take appropriate corrective action.
- Respond to equipment alarms, emergencies, and operating irregularities.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and assist engineering personnel with troubleshooting and repairs.
- Monitor and maintain boiler and chilled-water treatment systems.
- Follow all applicable New Jersey boiler, pressure-vessel, refrigeration, environmental, and workplace-safety requirements.
- Follow established lockout/tagout, confined-space, chemical-handling, and other safety procedures.
- Coordinate with the Chief Engineer and engineering staff to maintain continuous and reliable plant operation.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly central-plant work environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current New Jersey Blue Seal 1-C Steam Engineer's License, or higher.
- Current New Jersey Blue Seal 2-C Refrigeration Engineer's License, or higher.
- Demonstrated experience operating high-pressure steam boilers of 500 boiler horsepower or greater.
- Demonstrated experience operating large commercial/industrial refrigeration or chiller systems.
- Knowledge of boiler water treatment, combustion systems, pumps, valves, steam distribution, condensate/feedwater systems, refrigeration systems, and chilled-water systems.
- Ability to read and interpret gauges, instrumentation, control systems, equipment manuals, and plant drawings.
- Ability to identify abnormal operating conditions and respond appropriately.
- Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and respond to plant emergencies as required.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements associated with central-plant operations.
License Verification
Candidates will be required to provide evidence of their current New Jersey Department of Labor Operating Engineer licenses and demonstrate applicable experience operating high-pressure steam boilers and large-scale refrigeration/chiller systems.
