Princeton Day School is seeking a full-time experienced Security Officer, working throughout all areas of the school campus, providing an authoritative presence while promoting safety and order. The Security Officer reports to the Director of Safety and Security.
Regular Work Schedule:
- Sunday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
- Monday – Thursday: 2:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
- Overtime and additional hours may be required based on the needs of the School, including emergencies, special events, and campus closures.
For this position, the ideal candidate is expected to:
- Perform regular security tours throughout the campus to maintain a visible security presence and identify potential safety or security concerns.
- Manage and direct vehicle traffic and parking on campus as needed.
- Monitor the activities of visitors, faculty, staff, students, contractors, and renters to help maintain a safe and orderly environment.
- Serve as an emergency responder and respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies, alarms, safety concerns, and other incidents.
- Build positive, strong, and friendly relationships with all School constituents, engendering trust and open communication.
- Answer alarms and investigate disturbances.
- Monitor and authorize the entrance/departure of employees, visitors, and other authorized persons to guard against theft and maintain the security of the premises.
- Prepare reports of daily activities and irregularities, if necessary, including equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or any unusual occurrences.
- Call the police and/or fire department in case of emergency, such as fire or presence of unauthorized persons, and assist authorities as appropriate.
- Circulate among visitors, patrons, employees, and renters to ensure a visible presence, preserve order, and protect property.
- Warn persons of policy infractions or violations and apprehend and/or evict violators from the premises, as appropriate.
- Escort/transport individuals to specified locations to provide personal protection.
- Serve as an information resource by answering questions and providing direction.
- Be responsible for fire alarm, sprinkler, and door access systems; inspect/adjust security systems, equipment, and machinery to ensure operational use and detect evidence of tampering.
- Investigate malfunctions observed or reported, including problems with temperature, lighting, open windows, and security.
- Monitor building systems, including A/C, furnace, or boiler.
- Detect safety hazards in accordance with Fire Codes while also monitoring weaknesses in building security.
- Investigate vandalism and detain suspects until police respond.
- Erect barricades and assist with traffic control during special events, emergencies, and other campus activities.
- Inspect and maintain all AEDs.
- Assist with lockouts, dead vehicle batteries, lost persons, etc.
- Review CCTV recordings when prompted.
Emergency Closures- In the event the school is closed because of an emergency (e.g. snow or other severe weather) on a school/weekday, the Security Officer:
- Is expected to report for work at a time and duration determined by the Director
- If the event occurs on a weekend or holiday, you will be called in as needed
- Will be paid for the hours worked plus an additional 4 straight-time hours
- If you cannot travel to school because of storm conditions, you must report this fact by speaking directly with the Director to request an approved absence. Missed shift hours will be counted as vacation
- In the event of a delayed opening, you will be notified by the Director when to report to work
- In the event of an early dismissal, you will be notified by the Director when to leave work
- Emergency Closing routine should include (but not limited to) the following:
- Monitor security (access) and fire alarm systems – contact appropriate contractor(s) if necessary
- Sit at Main Reception area to be a visible presence to potential visitors
- Perform regular security rounds

Physical Demands:
- The physical demands are those needed to successfully fulfill the job duties and responsibilities stated above.
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds on occasion.
- The employee must possess the ability to walk, run, climb stairs and complete patrol circuit in a timely and efficient manner.
Required Certifications/ Licenses:
- Valid Driver's License
- CPR Certification
- Black Seal Boiler License (can be obtained within 6 months of hire)
- NJ SORA License (can be obtained within 6 months of hire)
Compensation Range: $23.00 to $28.00 per hour (this role is eligible for PDS' full benefits package)
