Electrical Engineer – Design Standards / Quality Assurance

Position Summary
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support the Engineering Department’s Quality Assurance Division, Design Standards Unit. Under the supervision of the Design Standards Unit Manager and Assistant Manager, the Electrical Engineer will review electrical design and construction documents for Tenant Alteration Applications (TAA), Design Audit projects, and other projects at Port Authority facilities. The selected candidate will help ensure that electrical designs comply with applicable building and electrical codes, Port Authority technical standards, and project requirements.
The position requires substantial experience with building electrical systems, including medium-voltage systems above 600 volts, as well as the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary technical reviews and work effectively with Port Authority tenants, facilities personnel, design professionals, and internal reviewers.
Key Responsibilities
• Review electrical design and construction documents for Tenant Alteration Applications (TAA), Design Audit projects, and other Port Authority facility projects.
• Perform technical reviews of electrical systems, including medium-voltage systems above 600 volts, to verify compliance with applicable codes, standards, and Port Authority technical requirements.
• Download, organize, and perform preliminary reviews of electronic TAA submissions.
• Review construction drawings, electrical load and service calculations, specifications, technical reports, and supporting documentation for completeness and code compliance.
• Evaluate electrical designs associated with building and transportation facilities, including power distribution, fire alarm, cathodic protection, radio frequency, and related electrical systems.
• Identify code, design, and technical-standard deficiencies and develop clear, concise review comments.
• Coordinate comments and technical input from other engineering and design disciplines.
• Prepare memoranda and other correspondence transmitting consolidated review comments to Port Authority line departments and project stakeholders.
• Attend meetings with tenant Architects and Engineers of Record to discuss technical review comments, resolve outstanding issues, and facilitate project progression.
• Assign appropriate technical disciplines to perform required code and design reviews.
• Coordinate with Port Authority facilities and internal stakeholders to process TAA and Design Audit projects efficiently.
• Serve as a liaison among Port Authority tenants, facilities personnel, design professionals, and in-house application reviewers to maintain effective communication and workflow.
• Track project submissions, reviews, responses, and outstanding technical issues through completion.
• Utilize Port Authority and external document-management, collaboration, and review systems in support of project processing.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
2. A current Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of New York and/or New Jersey is required.
3. Minimum of five (5) years of diverse professional experience involving building electrical codes and electrical systems, including:
Medium-voltage systems above 600 volts
Fire alarm systems
Cathodic protection systems
Radio frequency systems
4. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of electrical engineering disciplines associated with the design and construction of buildings, transportation facilities, and related infrastructure.
5. Strong knowledge of applicable electrical and building codes, design practices, and construction requirements.
6. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare professional technical comments, memoranda, and correspondence.
7. Demonstrated ability to act as an effective liaison among tenants, facility representatives, engineers, architects, technical reviewers, and other project stakeholders.
8. Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple technical reviews and projects simultaneously.
9. Comprehensive computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
10. Ability and willingness to learn and utilize various internal and external software platforms, including SharePoint, Trimble, Adobe Reader/Acrobat, and other project/document-management applications.
Compensation
Good-faith compensation rate range is around $60-$75 per hour, depending on experience, qualifications, certifications, technical expertise, and client requirements.
Preferred Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical design review, code compliance, and quality assurance for complex building and infrastructure projects. Experience working on transportation facilities, public infrastructure, tenant alteration projects, or projects involving multidisciplinary design reviews is highly desirable.
The successful candidate should be detail-oriented, technically proficient, and comfortable independently reviewing complex electrical designs while coordinating with multiple stakeholders. The role requires sound engineering judgment, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly communicate technical requirements and resolve design-review issues in a collaborative environment.
