OverviewColliers Engineering & Design is seeking a motivated and technically capable Environmental Engineer/Scientist to join our team in Mt. Arlington, New Jersey! The successful candidate will assist with environmental investigations, regulatory compliance, site remediation, hazardous materials assessments, environmental sampling, field oversight, data evaluation, and preparation of technical reports and regulatory documentation. The position will provide exposure to a broad range of environmental projects involving contaminated properties, redevelopment, environmental due diligence, soil and groundwater investigations, vapor intrusion, hazardous materials, asbestos, remediation, and regulatory compliance. The candidate will work closely with Project Managers, Senior Engineers/Scientists, clients, contractors, laboratories, and regulatory agencies. The ideal candidate will have an interest in environmental consulting, excellent technical and written communication skills, the ability to work independently in the field and office, and a willingness to develop expertise in applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
ResponsibilitiesField Investigation and Environmental Sampling
- Conduct and assist with environmental site investigations, including soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil gas, sub-slab soil vapor, and indoor/ambient air sampling.
- Perform field screening and documentation using appropriate environmental monitoring and sampling equipment.
- Perform field observations and document site conditions, remedial activities, excavation activities, waste management, and environmental controls.
- Prepare detailed field notes, sample logs, photographs, chain-of-custody documentation, and daily field reports.
- Coordinate with drilling contractors, laboratories, remediation contractors, and other subcontractors.
- Perform environmental monitoring during construction, excavation, demolition, remediation, and other site activities.
Environmental Assessment and Remediation
- Assist with Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments and other environmental due diligence activities.
- Support remedial investigations and remedial action projects involving contaminated soil, groundwater, soil vapor, and other environmental media.
- Assist with the evaluation of historical site operations, environmental databases, analytical data, and regulatory records.
- Review laboratory analytical results and evaluate results against applicable regulatory criteria.
- Assist with preparation of remedial investigation reports, remedial action reports, site investigation reports, environmental assessment reports, and other technical documents.
- Support development and implementation of soil and groundwater sampling programs and remediation strategies.
- Assist with oversight and documentation of soil excavation, transportation, disposal, treatment, and restoration activities.
Vapor Intrusion and Vapor Mitigation
- Assist with vapor intrusion investigations, including sub-slab soil vapor, soil gas, indoor air, and ambient air sampling.
- Support the evaluation and design of vapor intrusion mitigation and vapor intrusion mitigation systems (VIMS).
- Assist with VIMS installation oversight, system commissioning, and post-installation performance monitoring.
- Evaluate vapor mitigation system performance and assist with preparation of technical memoranda and reports.
Hazardous Materials and Building Assessments
- Conduct hazardous materials surveys and building inspections.
- Assist with identification and assessment of asbestos-containing materials (ACM), lead-based paint, PCBs, mercury-containing equipment, universal wastes, and other regulated or potentially hazardous materials.
- Assist with preparation of hazardous materials survey reports, specifications, abatement documents, and contractor requirements.
- Conduct asbestos and hazardous materials sampling in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and industry practices.
- Assist with asbestos abatement monitoring and air monitoring activities, as appropriate.
Regulatory Compliance
- Research and interpret applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
- Assist with regulatory submissions, correspondence, permits, notifications, and agency coordination.
- Develop familiarity with applicable requirements of agencies including NJDEP, PADEP, NYSDEC, USEPA, OSHA, and other regulatory authorities.
- Assist Project Managers with regulatory compliance evaluations and preparation of agency response documentation.
- Maintain awareness of changes to applicable environmental regulations, guidance documents, standards, and technical requirements.
Technical Reporting
- Prepare and edit technical reports, letters, memoranda, work plans, sampling plans, specifications, and regulatory correspondence.
- Compile and evaluate analytical laboratory data, field measurements, historical information, and other technical information.
- Prepare tables, figures, site plans, sampling location plans, and other technical exhibits.
- Maintain organized project files and supporting documentation.
- Review technical documents prepared by subcontractors, laboratories, and other project team members.
Project Support
- Assist Project Managers with project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordination.
- Prepare scopes of work, cost estimates, proposals, and subcontractor requests as directed.
- Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, laboratories, regulatory agencies, and project team members.
- Participate in project meetings and site meetings.
- Maintain accurate records of project hours, expenses, and field activities.
- Perform other related environmental engineering/scientific duties as assigned.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, Chemistry, or related discipline.
- 2–5 years of environmental consulting experience involving contaminated sites, environmental investigations, remediation, or regulatory compliance.
- Experience with NJDEP, NYSDEC and/or PADEP environmental programs.
- Experience with soil, groundwater, soil vapor, indoor air, or surface water sampling.
- Experience with environmental data management and evaluation.
- Experience with asbestos, hazardous materials, or building-related environmental assessments.
- 40 Hour HAZWOPER Certification required.
- 8-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER current annual refresher required.
- Engineering-in-Training (EIT) certification or eligibility for professional engineering licensure, preferred.
- OSHA 10-Hour Safety & Health Standards for Construction preferred.
- Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
Compensation: $67,980 - $86,570 per year (depending on qualifications)
