Role Summary
URBN is hiring a Software Engineer to join the Enterprise Core Services team. We are looking for an engineer with 2-5 years of experience to help build and maintain our Kafka-based event streaming platform and support the migration of legacy enterprise systems into modern, cloud-native services. You will work closely with senior and staff engineers, product managers, and platform engineers to deliver reliable, well-tested integration services, while growing your skills in distributed systems and enterprise integration.
Role Responsibilities
- Implement and maintain services that participate in our Kafka-based event streaming architecture, under the guidance of senior team members.
- Build and support enterprise integration services as part of the migration off legacy platforms.
- Use agentic coding tools such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar technologies to scope, implement, and troubleshoot well-defined tasks, with your work reviewed against the same standards applied to any pull request.
- Write and maintain automated tests, and participate actively in code review - both giving and receiving feedback.
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Platform Engineers, and other Software Engineers on day-to-day feature and integration work.
- Investigate and fix defects surfaced during development, testing, or production support, escalating ambiguous or architectural questions to senior engineers.
- Contribute to documentation for the services and patterns you work on.
- Learn and apply the team's conventions for Kafka topic design, schema evolution, and service migration patterns.
Role Qualifications
- 2-5 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Working proficiency in Python, with experience building and maintaining services or APIs.
- Exposure to event-driven systems or message queues (Kafka experience a plus, not required) and a willingness to build deeper expertise here.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and modern CI/CD and testing practices.
- Comfortable using or learning agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Codex, Cursor) as part of the day-to-day workflow.
- Strong fundamentals: clear written communication, careful code review habits, and a bias toward asking questions when scope or requirements are unclear.
- Eagerness to learn distributed systems and enterprise integration patterns from senior team members.
