The role combines strategic leadership, organizational influence, technical expertise, and operational execution. The Executive Director leads a team of automation engineers responsible for developing, maintaining, and evolving automation capabilities utilizing technologies such as Ansible, Terraform, Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) frameworks, cloud-native automation services, and CI/CD pipelines.
Success in this role requires more than building automation solutions. The Executive Director must drive cultural adoption, establish engineering standards, define reusable patterns, and ensure automation becomes the preferred mechanism for infrastructure delivery and operations across all Service Owner organizations.
Operating at the intersection of Cloud Engineering, Platform Engineering, Infrastructure Operations, and DevSecOps, this leader accelerates cloud adoption by reducing manual effort, increasing consistency, improving reliability, and enabling self-service infrastructure capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Automation Strategy
- Define and execute the enterprise strategy for infrastructure automation.
- Establish a multi-year roadmap for automation capabilities that supports cloud transformation, operational excellence, and engineering productivity objectives.
- Identify opportunities to eliminate manual processes, standardize infrastructure delivery patterns, and increase automation adoption across the organization.
- Partner with Infrastructure, Cloud, Security, Architecture, and Engineering leaders to align automation investments with enterprise technology priorities.
- Evaluate emerging automation technologies, AI-assisted automation capabilities, and platform engineering trends to improve organizational effectiveness.
Automation Adoption & Advocacy
- Serve as the primary evangelist for infrastructure automation across all Service Owner teams.
- Drive organizational understanding of automation as a strategic capability rather than a collection of technical tools.
- Partner with Service Owners to identify automation opportunities and help prioritize adoption roadmaps.
- Establish governance, standards, and best practices that promote consistency without inhibiting innovation.
- Define and track automation adoption metrics, value realization, engineering productivity improvements, and operational efficiency gains.
Infrastructure-as-Code & Cloud Enablement
- Establish Infrastructure-as-Code as the standard approach for infrastructure deployment and lifecycle management.
- Drive adoption of Terraform, cloud-native provisioning frameworks, policy-as-code, and reusable infrastructure modules.
- Work closely with cloud platform teams to accelerate migration and modernization initiatives through automation.
- Ensure infrastructure delivery processes support scalability, resilience, security, auditability, and regulatory requirements.
- Develop automation frameworks that enable both centralized platform capabilities and decentralized consumption models.
Automation Engineering Leadership
- Lead a high-performing team of automation engineers, developers, and platform specialists.
- Oversee the development of reusable automation services, libraries, workflows, blueprints, and self-service capabilities.
- Ensure automation assets are maintained as enterprise products with appropriate lifecycle management, support models, and quality standards.
- Establish engineering disciplines around source control, testing, code reviews, release management, and operational support.
- Drive continuous improvement of automation tooling and development practices.
CI/CD & Automation Pipeline Governance
- Establish and govern CI/CD practices supporting Infrastructure-as-Code and automation development.
- Ensure automation code follows the same engineering rigor applied to application development.
- Define standards for:
- Source control management
- Automated testing
- Security scanning
- Code promotion
- Deployment pipelines
- Change management integration
- Compliance validation
- Embed automated quality controls that reduce operational risk while increasing deployment velocity.
Automation Across the Infrastructure Lifecycle
- Define and communicate clear automation patterns across distinct infrastructure use cases, including:
- Resource Provisioning Automation
- Infrastructure Management Automation
- Ensure teams understand the differing objectives, controls, and operational models associated with provisioning automation versus management automation.
Platform Engineering & Self-Service Enablement
- Partner with platform engineering teams to expand self-service capabilities for infrastructure consumers.
- Drive creation of reusable automation products that simplify service consumption while maintaining governance standards.
- Promote engineering patterns that reduce delivery friction and improve developer and infrastructure team experiences.
- Support the evolution toward platform-centric operating models that increase consistency, speed, and reliability.
Pay and Benefits:
- Competitive compensation, including base pay and annual incentive
- Comprehensive health and life insurance and well-being benefits, based on location
- Pension / Retirement benefits
- Paid Time Off and Personal/Family Care, and other leaves of absence when needed to support your physical, financial, and emotional well-being.
- DTCC offers a flexible/hybrid model of 3 days onsite and 2 days remote (onsite Tuesdays, Wednesdays and a third day unique to each team or employee).
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 15 years of related experience
- Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience
- 12+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, cloud engineering, platform engineering, automation engineering, DevSecOps, or related disciplines.
- Significant experience leading enterprise-scale automation initiatives.
- Experience managing engineering teams responsible for Infrastructure-as-Code and automation development.
- Proven success driving technology transformation through influence across large matrix organizations.
- Deep understanding of cloud operating models, infrastructure services, and engineering platforms.
- Strong knowledge of Terraform, Ansible, CI/CD platforms, source control systems, and automation frameworks.
- Experience building reusable platforms, services, and engineering capabilities that operate at enterprise scale.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both executive and engineering audiences.
Talents Needed for Success:
- Executive Influence
