SALARY:  The salary range for this position is $87,447.54.

The Supreme Court is seeking an individual with excellent organizational and communication skills to support a Justice of the Supreme Court. Paralegal or legal skills are a plus.


Note: The physical location for this position will be the Justice’s chambers in Englewood, New Jersey

Example of Duties

  • Preparing and organizing all materials for Supreme Court appeals, petitions for certification, disciplinary matters, emergent matters and motions (both hard copy and electronic)
  • Preparing and organizing all materials for oral argument and conference (both hard copy and electronic)
  • Proofreading court materials for accuracy
  • Performing cite and record checks
  • Formatting judicial opinions and other legal documents, implementing revisions, and editing documents for grammar and formatting
  • Maintaining workflow in and out of chambers 
  • Managing and coordinating logistics for the Justice’s professional schedule and calendar, including speaking engagements and events
  • Managing all incoming and outgoing communications, including mail, telephone, etc.
  • Procuring supplies and equipment for chambers
  • Drafting correspondence
  • Answering inquiries from the public and Court staff
  • Managing onboarding logistics for prospective interns and law clerks
  • Coordinating law clerk schedules and time sheets
Regular and predictable physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position.

Qualifications

Five (5) years of experience in a legal setting as an attorney, paralegal, secretary or assistant, performing a variety of services including preparing and proofreading legal documents, and maintaining and organizing databases and records (hardcopy and electronic).


Individuals with strong organizational and communication skills are encouraged to apply. 


Substitution: Juris doctor (J.D.) degree may be substituted for (2) years of experience indicated above. Successful completion of a paralegal program or clerical training program with a minimum of 700 classroom training hours or 30 semester hour credits may be substituted for one (1) year of experience indicated above.  


Ability to use a keyboard, no minimum speed.

 
Note: Knowledge of legal terminology and working knowledge of Microsoft Office is helpful.

Supplemental Information

Driver's License:  Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Authorization to Work:  US citizenship is not required.  Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.

Special Note:  Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting.  All data received will be kept in strict confidence except to inform the individual of the findings and what action will be taken as a result of this information.

Residency Law:  In accordance with N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), the "New Jersey First Act," all persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Any person may request an exemption from that requirement from the Employee Residency Review Committee in the Department of Labor & Workforce Development on the basis of either hardship or employer critical need.
