The Director of Total Rewards is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading the organization's total rewards strategy, including compensation, benefits, wellness, recognition, and retirement programs. This role ensures that total rewards programs support the company's business objectives, talent strategy, and employee value proposition while maintaining market competitiveness, internal equity, regulatory compliance, and fiscal responsibility.
The Director of Total Rewards serves as a strategic partner to senior leadership, Human Resources, Finance, and Talent Acquisition, leveraging market insights and analytics to attract, retain, and engage top talent.
Key Responsibilities
Total Rewards Strategy
- Develop and execute a comprehensive Total Rewards strategy aligned with organizational goals and workforce priorities.
- Establish and maintain a competitive compensation and benefits philosophy.
- Assess market trends, industry benchmarks, and emerging practices to ensure programs remain competitive and effective.
- Partner with executive leadership to align reward programs with organizational performance and growth objectives.
Compensation
- Lead the design, implementation, and administration of compensation programs, including: base salary structures; annual merit planning; variable pay and incentive plans; sales compensation programs; executive compensation support
- Oversee market pricing, compensation benchmarking, and salary survey participation.
- Ensure pay practices promote internal equity and support pay transparency initiatives.
- Lead annual compensation review and planning cycles, including merit process, bonus programs and commission programs.
Benefits & Well-Being
- Direct the design, administration, and optimization of employee benefits programs, including health, welfare, retirement, leave, and wellness offerings.
- Evaluate vendor performance and negotiate contracts to maximize value and employee experience.
- Identify opportunities to enhance employee well-being and engagement through innovative benefit programs.
- Collaborate with brokers, consultants, and carriers to ensure competitive offerings and cost management.
Analytics & Governance
- Utilize workforce analytics and market intelligence to evaluate program effectiveness and inform decision-making.
- Develop dashboards and executive reporting related to compensation, benefits costs, turnover, pay equity, and employee engagement.
- Lead pay equity analyses and recommend actions to address identified gaps.
- Ensure sound governance, documented processes, and consistent program administration.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations related to compensation, benefits, retirement plans, and pay transparency.
- Partner with Legal, Finance, and HR leaders on audits, regulatory reporting, and risk mitigation initiatives.
- Monitor legislative changes and assess potential impacts on total rewards programs.
HRIS
- Lead strategy and roadmap for all HR systems and tools.
- Develop appropriate Talent in maintenance implementation of all HR systems and tools.
Talent & Business Partnership
- Serve as the subject matter expert and trusted advisor to HR Business Partners, Talent Acquisition, executives, and people leaders.
- Provide consultation on compensation recommendations, organizational design, job evaluations, and offer strategies.
- Support attraction and retention efforts through competitive and innovative rewards programs.
- Partner with Talent Acquisition to develop market-based hiring and offer practices.
Leadership
- Lead and develop the Total Rewards team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence.
- Manage external consultants, brokers, and service providers.
- Establish departmental goals, budgets, and key performance indicators.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in compensation, benefits, or total rewards.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing Total Rewards, Compensation, or Benefits functions.
- Strong understanding of compensation strategy, job architecture, incentive design, benefits administration, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience leading annual compensation planning and benefits renewal processes.
- Strong analytical, financial modeling, and data interpretation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and drive strategic initiatives.
- Advanced proficiency with HRIS, compensation, and analytics systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or related discipline.
- Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), SHRM-SCP, or SPHR certification.
- Experience in publicly traded, private equity-backed, or multi-state organizations.
- Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, integrations, or large-scale organizational transformation initiatives.
The salary range for this position is $165000-195000 per year plus bonus. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, education, skills, training, and work location.
